A former town in Abuta District, Hokkaido. It includes the western half of Lake Toya and Toyako Onsen Town, and is served by the Muroran Main Line and the Do-o Expressway. The central settlement, Abuta, faces Uchiura Bay. In addition to producing asparagus, sugar beets, and potatoes, the town also cultivates scallops and releases salmon. In March 2006, it merged with Toya Village in Abuta District to become Toyako Town in Abuta District. Area: 66.85 km2 . Population: 9,449 (2003). 北海道虻田郡の旧町。洞爺(とうや)湖西半部と洞爺湖温泉町を含み,室蘭本線,道央自動車道が通じる。中心集落の虻田は内浦湾に臨む。アスパラガス,テンサイ,ジャガイモを産するほか,ホタテの養殖,サケの放流事業も行う。2006年3月,虻田郡洞爺村と合併し町制,虻田郡洞爺湖町となる。66.85km2。9449人(2003)。
