The capital of Zacatecas State in central Mexico. It is located about 500km northwest of Mexico City, in a deep, narrow valley at an altitude of about 2,250m, at the northeastern foot of the southern Madre del Occidental mountain range. It was founded as a mining center in 1548, two years after silver ore was discovered in the area, and became a city in 1585. By the 19th century, the surrounding mines had been developed to produce one-fifth of the world's silver. It is still a mining center, but it is also a commercial and industrial center for the surrounding agricultural areas. The old town, centered on the cathedral (1612-1752), famous for its beautifully carved façade, was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 1993. It is also the location of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (1832). About 45km south-southwest is the ruins of a vast Indian settlement, Chico Mostoc. It is the main highway that connects the border town of Ciudad Juarez with Mexico City, is served by a railway line, and intersects with the road that connects Monterrey with Guadalajara. Population: 108,528 (1990 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
