Ishikawa [City] - Ishikawa

Japanese: 石川[市] - いしかわ
Ishikawa [City] - Ishikawa
An old city in the center of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. After World War II, refugees concentrated in Ishikawa, the city center facing Kin Bay. In 1945, it was incorporated as a special city and a US military and civilian government was established, but the population dropped sharply as the refugees returned home and the government relocated. Ishikawa Beach, a US military facility, was returned in 1972, and urbanization progressed. The Ishikawa Dam, the largest in Okinawa Prefecture, has been used for rice paddies, and sugarcane, flowers, melons, tea, pineapples, etc. are cultivated. A coal-fired power plant and a ready-mix concrete factory are located on the Akasaki Reclaimed Land. The Okinawa Expressway runs through the city. In April 2005, it merged with Gushikawa City, Yonashiro Town in Nakagami County, and Katsuren Town to form Uruma City. 21.12 km2 . 22,635 people (2003).
