Hodogaya

Japanese: 保土ヶ谷 - ほどがや
Hodogaya
This post station on the Tokaido was located in Tachibana County, Musashi Province, in the southern part of what is now Hodogaya Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. In the early Kamakura period, it was included in Hangaya Mikuriya, an area of the inner shrine of Ise Jingu. The name Hodogaya appears in the Odawara Shusho Yakucho (Record of Odawara Domain). It was designated a post station on the Tokaido in 1601, and was responsible for the transportation of horse-drawn horses between Fujisawa and Kanagawa. Initially, only Hodogaya-cho was in charge of relaying, but by the Genroku period (1688-1704), Iwama-cho, Godo-cho, and Katabira-cho were added, and Hodogaya-shuku was made up of four towns. According to the Shukumura Taigaicho (Record of Inns and Villages), the distance to Kanagawa-shuku in the east was 1 ri 9 cho, and to Totsuka-shuku in the west was 2 ri 9 cho. The main inn and wakihonjin were in Hodogaya-cho, and the wholesaler's office was in Godo-cho. During the Tenpo period (1830-1844), there were 69 inns, 49 of which employed two female servants. In 1668, Sukego village had 13 villages in Sadasuke, in 1689 it had 10 villages in Sadasuke and 27 villages in Osuke, and by 1725 it had 39 villages and a stipend of 10,727 koku. The botamochi rice cakes from Tachiba teahouse in Nishikata Sakaigi were a famous local product. With the abolition of the horse-riding station in 1872, it lost its function as a post station. In 1889, Hodogaya town was established, centered around the former Hodogaya post station. In 1927 it was incorporated into Yokohama city, and in the same year Hodogaya ward was established.
