Aohada - Aohada

Japanese:
Aohada - Aohada

A deciduous tall tree of the family Ilex (APG classification: Ilex family). It usually grows in mountainous areas and can reach a height of 10 meters. Its gray-white outer bark is thin and easily peeled off with the fingernails to reveal the green inner bark, hence the name. Its leaves are thin, glossy on the underside, oval, 4-7 cm long, and often grow on short branches together with the flowers. The flowers bloom in May and June and are green-white in color. The drupes are elliptical and spherical, ripening to red. It is also called Marubaumemodoki. The wood is easy to process and has little warping, and is used for toys, kokeshi dolls, and marquetry. Mochi is extracted from the bark. In the Kumano region of Mie Prefecture, the leaves are called Kobo tea and used as a substitute for tea, and in Kochi Prefecture, young leaves are eaten. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and China. The closely related I. montana Torrey et Gray grows in eastern North America, but some believe it to be the same species as I. montana.
