Tengu Zoushi

Japanese:
Tengu Zoushi

A seven-volume picture scroll from the Kamakura period. It satirizes the tyranny and arrogance of the monks of the great temples of the northern and southern parts of Japan, as well as the strange behavior of the new religious movements of the Jodo and Jishu sects, using seven types of Tengu as examples. It is a unique work that vividly illustrates the dissatisfaction with the religious world of the time through pictures. In addition to the Enryakuji and Toji scrolls (both in the Tokyo National Museum), the Onjoji scroll (owned by the Miyamoto family), the Miidera scroll known as the Jodo Mountain Recluse Scroll (formerly owned by the Hisamatsu family) and the Various Tengu Enlightenment Scroll (Nezu Museum, Tokyo), copies of the two scrolls, the Kofukuji and Todaiji scrolls (both in the Tokyo National Museum), have been handed down. Compared to the other five scrolls, the two Miidera scrolls are more interesting both as a tale and as a source of performing arts material. The preface to the Kofuku-ji scroll also contains the motive for its creation, along with the date "October 6, 1296 (Einin 4)," which gives us information about the time of its creation. The entire scroll is a single stroke, and the painting uses graceful brushwork and gorgeous colors, conveying the authentic lineage of Yamato-e painting from the Kamakura period.
