In cities where population and industry are concentrated, various environmental deteriorations caused by densely packed living are inevitable, but the task of urban sanitation is to improve this urban environment and maintain and promote the health of residents. Characteristics of the urban environment include air pollution, water pollution, noise, vibration (vibration pollution), housing shortages, traffic difficulties, and social stress. Large-scale facilities such as water supply, sewerage, and waste disposal, as well as urban planning such as zoning and urban redevelopment, are also unique to cities.
