A bowl-shaped depression that develops in limestone regions. A type of karst depression. Its origins include erosion by rainfall, or the expansion of underground limestone caverns causing the ground surface to collapse. Its plan is circular or elliptical, and its diameter varies from around 1 meter to over 100 meters. Clay-based terra rossa (red soil) develops at the bottom of the doline, and in some places it has become cultivated land. When a doline develops, it becomes an uvalle.
