Trinil - Trinil (English spelling)

Trinil - Trinil (English spelling)

Located in the middle reaches of the Solo River in central Java, Indonesia, this is the first site of Pithecanthropus (Homo erectus erectus). In 1891, the Dutchman Dubois discovered a skull on a sandbank in the Solo River that flows through Trinil village. In 1892, he discovered a left femur 15 meters away from the site of the skull, and in 1994 reported these animal fossils as Pithecanthropus erectus. In 1907-08, the German scientist Selenka systematically investigated the strata on both sides of the sandbank, revealing the fauna and flora of the Trinil Formation (Middle Pleistocene) with stegodonts as type fossils, laying the foundation for subsequent research on Javanese Pleistocene humans in Sangiran, central Java.
