...Also, with the rise of the power of the Pashas during this period, the region began to have its own unique regional characteristics. In terms of population composition, during the Ottoman period, the majority of settlers were Turks and Tatars, but in the 18th century, there were also Ukrainians, Cossacks, Lipoven (a Russian heretic of the Greek Orthodox Church who formed their own village organizations and mainly engaged in fishing) and Germans who had migrated from Russia. On the other hand, from the second half of the 18th century, Bulgarians and Turks (some of whom were Christians called Gagauz) who had fled Ottoman oppression also settled in the region.
