A general term for insects in the family Dryopidae of the order Coleoptera. Adults are ovoid or long ovoid, with a body length of 1 to 8 mm. The antennae are extremely short, and many have comb-like segments at the end. The legs are long compared to the body, and the claws are large. For this reason, the English name is long-toed water beetle. Adults live in water or on land, and in water they move slowly by attaching themselves to submerged objects; they cannot swim. The larvae live in water. About 250 species have been recorded worldwide, and two species in Japan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
