Minato Kaneyama

...After the Kanbun era (1661-73), when timber was transported twice a year, in summer and winter, it was reduced to just one trip in winter, and boat transport developed during the time between these trips. As early as the Tenbun era (1532-55), boat traffic was already thriving around Saito Masayoshi's Kaneyama Castle, and from then until the mid-Edo period, Kaneyama Port, with its wide hinterland, developed as the commercial center of the upper reaches of the Kiso River, and in particular became a sales base for salt shipped downstream. In the later period, Kurose Port in Hosome Village became a commercial center as the terminus of the Kiso River upstream trip. ...
