Kangaroos and koalas, symbols of Australia, are classified as part of a group called marsupials, which means animals with a baby pouch. In eutherians (placental animals), including humans, a fertilized egg is implanted in the mother's uterus at the blastocyst stage after a certain degree of development. Thereafter, the baby grows and develops while receiving nutrients and oxygen from the mother, and is born looking almost exactly like its parent. However, unlike the chorioallantoic placenta of eutherians, the placenta of marsupials is a less functional yolk sac placenta, so the fetus cannot develop sufficiently in the mother's uterus and is born in a very immature state.
