Juraj Križanić

A Croatian Catholic theologian and political writer. He went to Rome as a young man and was educated there. He worked on the conflict between the Orthodox and Catholic churches and became interested in Russia. He went to Russia and spent about a quarter of a century there. During this time he was exiled to Siberia by the Tsarist government, but he wrote a political work called Politika, in which he argued that Russia was the only country that could protect the Slavs from the Germans and Turks, and that to achieve this, it was necessary for the Russian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church to be united. In his later years, he was released from exile and went to Poland, where he died.

クロアチア人のカトリック神学者で政治著作家。青年時代にローマへ渡り，そこで教育を受ける。正教会とカトリック教会の対立問題に取り組み，ロシアに関心を抱いた。ロシアに赴き，約四半世紀を過ごした。この間，ツァーリ政府によりシベリアに追放されたが，政治著作《ポリティカ》を書き，ロシアこそドイツ人やトルコ人からスラブ人を守ることができるとし，そのためにロシア正教会とカトリック教会との統一の必要性を主張。晩年に追放が解かれ，ポーランドに渡り客死した。
