Facing the Malabar Coast of South India, Travancore and Cochin were both princely states under British protection from 1795 to 1947. The common language of the inhabitants was Malayalam. In December 1927, nationalists from British India joined in and the All-India States' Peoples Conference was founded, under whose leadership movements for democratic government were launched in both states. When India gained independence in August 1947, the princes of both states announced their intention to join India, and they were smoothly annexed.
