The period from the 10th to 9th century BC, i.e. the middle of the Western Zhou period, was a time of remarkable change in social customs and religious ideas, and auspicious jewels such as those attached to the handles of ladle-shaped objects appeared in response to this change. In the classics of the late 1st millennium BC, these were called kankei.
