Running suit - Running suit

This was one of the osso cases in the Edo period. It involved running directly to a higher-ranking feudal lord or the Shogunate's office to make a demand without going through the prescribed procedures. For example, in 1767 (Meiwa 4), the peasants of Tajima Village, Aizu County, Iwashiro, who disliked the control of the Aizu clan, ran to the office of Ando Danjo Shohitsu, the Shogunate's financial magistrate, to make a complaint. Also, in 1779 (An'ei 8), the peasants of Shinohara Village, Katori County, Shimousa, ran to the Shogunate's financial magistrate's office to complain about their lord's failure to carry out investigations. The Shogunate and feudal lords forbade such lawsuits, calling them illegal.

江戸時代における越訴(おっそ)の一つ。定められた手順を経ずに、直接上級領主や幕閣の館(やかた)に駈け込んで要求を訴えること。たとえば1767年（明和4）会津藩の支配を嫌った岩代会津郡田島村百姓は、幕府勘定奉行(かんじょうぶぎょう)安藤弾正少弼(だんじょうしょうひつ)方へ駈込訴を行い、また1779年（安永8）下総香取(しもうさかとり)郡篠原(しのはら)村百姓は、自領主の吟味不行届(ぎんみふゆきとどき)を幕府勘定奉行所へ駈込訴している。幕藩領主は非合法として、こうした訴えを禁じた。
