A collection of data that describes programs and instructions to operate a computer. It is also simply called software. It refers to things written in a programming language that have been converted (compiled) into computer language, or scripts written in a scripting language. In general computers, there is an OS (basic software) that is responsible for the basic control of the computer, and applications (application software) that are responsible for the actual processing of tasks. While software refers to things that cannot be seen with the naked eye, visible things such as the computer itself, display, printer, and keyboard are called hardware. Commercially available games, music CDs, and DVD titles are also called software. Software is protected by copyright, and may not be copied or distributed without permission unless expressly permitted.

コンピューターを動作させるためのプログラムや命令を記述したデータのまとまり。単にソフトとも呼ぶ。プログラミング言語で記述したものをコンピューターの言葉に変換（コンパイル）したものや、スクリプト言語で記述したスクリプトなどを指す。一般的なコンピューターでは、コンピューターの基本的な制御を担当するOS（基本ソフト）と、実際の作業の処理を担当するアプリケーション（応用ソフト）に分かれている。ソフトウェアが目で見えないものを指すのに対し、コンピューター本体、ディスプレー、プリンター、キーボードなど、目に見えるものをハードウェアという。市販のゲームや音楽CD、DVDタイトルなどもソフトと呼ばれる。ソフトウェアは、著作権によって保護されており、明示的に許可されていない限り、無断でコピーや配布をしてはならない。
