A general term for rodents with long, sharp, needle-like hairs on their bodies, belonging to the Hystridae and Agropygidae families (Horcupidae). The Hystridae family (about 3 genera, 11 species) found in southern Eurasia and Africa and the Agropygidae (about 4 genera, 10 species) found in North and South America were once thought to be closely related, but in recent years they have been considered to be from completely different lineages. 体に長く鋭い針状毛を備えた齧歯(げつし)類で,ヤマアラシ科とキノボリヤマアラシ科(アメリカヤマアラシ科)に属するものの総称。ユーラシア南部からアフリカに分布するヤマアラシ科(約3属11種)と南北アメリカに分布するキノボリヤマアラシ科(約4属10種)は,かつては系統的に近縁と考えられていたが,近年ではまったく別の系統のものとみなされている。体長30~93cm,尾長2.5~45cm,体重0.9~30kg。
