An Iranian painter of the Safavid period. A leading figure in the Isfahan school of painting, which was active mainly in the court workshop of Shah Abbas I. The majority of his works are line drawings, and many of them are single-leaf portraits rather than illustrations for manuscripts. His style is clearly divided between the delicate brushwork of his early period and the rough touch of his later years. In his later works, the lines are weaker, the faces more stereotypical, the movements slower, and the overall atmosphere is more decadent. His distinctive, clear, soft, and rhythmic lines add volume, and the thin lines and wedge-shaped pointillism used to express the ends of turbans, sashes, etc. give the paintings a subtle sense of movement.

イランのサファビー朝期の画家。アッバース1世の宮廷工房を中心に活躍したイスファハーン画派の重鎮。作品の大半は線描画で，しかも多くは写本挿絵ではなく単葉の肖像画である。画風は初期の繊細な筆致と晩年のタッチの粗いスタイルに明らかに分けられる。後期の作品では描線に力がなく，顔貌は類型的に，動勢は緩慢になり，全体に退廃的な雰囲気が濃厚となる。彼特有の，明確で柔らかくリズミカルな描線は量感を盛りあげ，また，肥瘦のある線や，ターバン，帯などの末端の表現に使われている楔形の点描は，画面にわずかながら動勢を与える。
