Around 1560 - 1635 An Iranian painter of the Safavid period. A leading figure in the Isfahan school of painting, which was active mainly in the court workshop of Shah Abbas I. The majority of his works are line drawings, and many of them are single-leaf portraits rather than illustrations for manuscripts. His style is clearly divided between the delicate brushwork of his early period and the rough touch of his later years. In his later works, the lines are weaker, the faces more stereotypical, the movements slower, and the overall atmosphere is more decadent. His distinctive, clear, soft, and rhythmic lines add volume, and the thin lines and wedge-shaped pointillism used to express the ends of turbans, sashes, etc. give the paintings a subtle sense of movement.
