Tomé Açu (English spelling)
A city in the northeast of the state of Para in northern Brazil. Population 19,000 (1970). Located along the Acara River, a tributary of the Amazon near its mouth. The rainy season is December to May, the dry season is June to November, and the annual precipitation is 2,500 mm. Located on terra firme at an altitude of 10 to 20 meters, the city is served by boat (270 km) from Belem, 110 km north, regular bus service (180 km), and air taxi service. It is home to the Tomé-Açu settlement, the main Japanese settlement in northern Brazil. Established in 1929 as a settlement by the South America Colonization Company, 352 families settled there before World War II, but due to the outbreak of malaria, only a quarter of them settled there.
