Ciba-Geigy [Company] (English name) CIBA-GEIGY AG

The largest pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturer in Switzerland. It is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical manufacturers. Its headquarters are in Basel. It was formed in 1970 by the merger of CIBA AG and JR Geigy SA. Ciba was originally founded as a dyeworks in Basel by Alexander Clavel in 1859, and became the Gesellschaft für Chemisch Industrie in Basel in 1884. It started out by manufacturing synthetic dyes, began manufacturing pharmaceuticals at the end of the 19th century, and expanded into the plastics field with urea resins and formalin resins in the 1930s, changing its name to CIBA AG in 1945.

スイス最大の医薬･化学メーカー。医薬品では世界のトップクラス。本社バーゼル。1970年にチバ社CIBA AGとガイギー社J.R.Geigy S.A.が合併してできた。チバ社は1859年クラベルAlexander Clavelがバーゼルで始めた染色工場がその前身で，84年にGesellschaft für Chemisch Industrie in Baselとなった。合成染料の製造からスタートし，19世紀末ごろからは医薬品の製造に着手，1930年代からは尿素樹脂，ホルマリン樹脂などプラスチック分野に進出し，45年に社名をCIBA AGと改称。
