...Although the name is the same, the Kabuki and Ningyo-Joruri "Nenuchimono" are not direct adaptations of this play, but mainly refer to the style of performance of the jealousy caused by vengeful spirits. In Kabuki, it is said to have first been performed in Edo in March 1699 (Genroku 12) in "Isshin Gokaitama" at the Edo Nakamuraza Theater, and is considered the premiere of the Kabuki Juhachiban "Nen," but this is merely the oldest record of this style of role being performed by the Ichikawa Danjuro family. The performance of the jealousy caused by vengeful spirits was also included in "Kanto Oroku," which was performed at the same theater in March of the previous year....
