Paul von Heyse

German novelist. Born in Berlin to a linguist father. In Munich, together with Geibel, he became a central figure in the Munich School, a group of conservative poets. A prolific writer active in all literary genres, including poetry, novels, and plays, he is especially known for his short stories set in Italy, such as La Rabiata (1855). Based on a story in The Decameron about a poor knight who falls in love with a proud lady and finally wins her love by sacrificing his beloved hawk, he also advocated the "theory of the hawk," which states that a short story needs such a turning point. He also translated Spanish and Italian poems composed by Wolf. In 1910, he became the first German to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

ドイツの小説家。言語学者を父としてベルリンに生まれる。ミュンヘンでガイベルとともに保守的な詩人グループ「ミュンヘン派」の中心人物となる。詩、小説、戯曲などあらゆる文学ジャンルで活躍した多作の作家で、とくに『ララビアータ』（1855）をはじめイタリアに舞台をとった短編小説で知られる。また、誇り高い貴婦人に恋した貧しい騎士が、たいせつな鷹(たか)を犠牲にしてようやく彼女の愛を得ることができたという『デカメロン』のなかの話を踏まえて、短編小説にはこのような転換点が必要だとする「鷹の理論」を唱えた。ウォルフが作曲したスペイン詩とイタリア詩の翻訳もある。1910年ドイツ人として最初のノーベル文学賞を受賞。
