...refers to the revival of the Renaissance style of architecture in Europe in the early 19th century. In Germany, Friedrich von Gärtner (1792-1847) built the Ludwigskirche (1829-40) and the National Library (1831-40) in Munich, using a simple brick semicircular arch style similar to the Italian Romanesque and Renaissance styles. This style was well suited to Germany's lack of stone and became popular, and eventually changed to the adoption of elegant Renaissance styles such as Semper's Court Opera in Dresden (1838-41).
