Tenko Toyoda

Japanese: 豊田天功 - とよだてんこう

1805-1864 A Confucian scholar in the late Edo period.
Born in 1812. A samurai of the Mito Domain in Hitachi. Studied under Fujita Yukoku and others. Edited the "Dai Nihonshi" at Shokokan, and became president in 1856. After Perry's arrival, he wrote "New Strategies for Maritime Defense" and stressed the threat of Western countries and the importance of maritime defense. Died on January 21, 1861, at the age of 60. His given name was Ryo. He was commonly known as Hikojiro. His pen names were Matsuoka and Bansui.

文化2年生まれ。常陸(ひたち)水戸藩士。藤田幽谷(ゆうこく)らにまなぶ。彰考館で「大日本史」編修にあたり,安政3年総裁。ペリー来航後「防海新策」などをあらわし,欧米諸国の脅威と海防の重要性を説いた。文久4年1月21日死去。60歳。名は亮。通称は彦次郎。号は松岡,晩翠。
