…He studied at the Academie Julian (Paris, 1947) and the Art Students League (1949), where he became acquainted with John Cage, Albers, and Morris Kantor. In the late 1950s, he produced works using urban waste such as Coca-Cola bottles, stuffed animals, and signs, and was ridiculed as Neo-Dada. However, his “combine paintings,” which combine the violent brushstrokes of Abstract Expressionism with “objects,” are full of the dynamism of the real, everyday world. He soon broadened the scope of his activities, transferring photos from magazines such as “Life” onto canvases using silkscreen printing, performing his own unique dance, and realizing large-scale events using technology. In the 1970s, he experimented with compositions using fabric, and his diverse transformations have earned him the nickname “the Picasso of postwar art.” …
