Professor of geology at the École Supérieure des Mines in Paris (1835), chief engineer at the Ministry of Mines (33-47), chief mines inspector (47), and vice president of the Mines Committee (61). He is known for completing a detailed geological map of France, and for discussing the formation of mountains as a result of crustal movements caused by the cooling and contraction of the earth. His main work is Notice sur les systèmes des montagnes (52).
