An index of statistical dispersion (variability). The smaller the index, the less the dispersion. It is used in education and psychology statistics. It measures dispersion as the deviation of the numerical value x i of each term in a statistical sequence from its arithmetic mean ( x i - ) and then taking the arithmetic mean of the absolute values. This can be expressed as a formula: mean deviation = . The mean deviation is an easy concept to understand, but since it uses absolute values and is inconvenient to handle mathematically, standard deviation is more commonly used.
