Number notation - Kisuuho

A way of writing numbers. Today, the base-10 positional notation system is used, using the 10 Arabic numerals 0, 1, 2, ..., 9. For example, when writing the number 324, 3 represents the hundreds digit and indicates that there are three hundreds, 2 represents the tens digit and indicates that there are two tens, and 4 represents the ones digit and indicates that there are four ones. In this way, the positional notation system determines the size of a number depending on its position. In this notation system, when a digit is missing, a 0 is needed to indicate that there is nothing there. This allows us to express any large number, and by using a decimal point, we can also express any number close to 0.

Numbers can be expressed not only in decimal but also in binary, duodecimal, and sexagesimal positional notations. In binary notation, only the two digits 0 and 1 are used. For example, the number 11 in decimal is expressed as 1011 in binary.

数を書き表す仕方をいう。今日では、10個のアラビア数字0、1、2、……、9を用いた十進位取り記数法(じっしんくらいどりきすうほう)が用いられる。たとえば、324と数を表すとき、3は百の位を表し、100が三つあることを、2は十の位を表し、10が二つあることを、4は一の位を表し、1が四つあることを、それぞれ示している。このように、各数字が、どの位置にあるかによって、その示す大きさが定まってくるのが位取り記数法である。この記数法では、ある位が欠けているときは、そこになにもないことを示すための数字として、0が必要である。そして、これによって、どんな大きな数でも表せるし、小数点を使うことによって、0に近いどんな数でも表すこともできる。

　十進法でなく、二進法、十二進法、六十進法による位取り記数法によっても数を表すことができる。二進法のときは、0、1の二つの数字だけを使えばよい。たとえば、十進法で11と表される数は、二進法では1011と表す。
