Salicylic acid - Salicylic acid (English spelling)

Salicylic acid - Salicylic acid (English spelling)

Its chemical formula is C 6 H 4 (OH)COOH and it is another name for o (ortho)-hydroxybenzoic acid.

It is produced by reacting sodium phenoxide with carbon dioxide under heat and pressure. This reaction is called the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction. Its molecular weight is 138.1, its melting point is 159°C. It is a colorless solid that sublimes. It is a type of carboxylic acid that is acidic (dissociation constant K 1 = 1.55×10 -3 ), and because it has a phenolic hydroxyl group, it turns purple in iron(III) chloride solution. It is used as a synthetic raw material for pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and dyes.

Medicinal

It is used as a disinfectant and keratin softener. It has antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, but sodium salicylate is used for oral administration or injection, and salicylic acid itself is not used orally because it causes severe digestive disorders, so it is only used externally. Salicylic acid bandages used to remove corns and warts contain 50% salicylic acid, and ointments and topical solutions containing 2-10% salicylic acid are used for dermatophytosis such as tinea (athlete's foot) and psoriasis. It is also used in treatments for alopecia, underarm odor, and miliaria (heat rash).
