Born: April 21, 1904, Ushigome, Tokyo [Died] March 10, 1963. A shamisen player and composer of the Kyoto Kiyomoto-bushi. His real name was Miyagawa Genji. He started studying under Kiyomoto Junzaburo II at the age of six, and made his debut at age 12 under the name Kiyomoto Sanji. In 1922, when the Kiyomoto world split, he joined the Umeyoshi school (→ Kiyomoto Umeyoshi III) with his teacher, but soon returned to the Takanawa school (the Enjudayu side). After working as Kiyomoto Tozaburo, he took on the name Kiyomoto Eijiro III in 1937, and became the tachi shamisen for Kiyomoto Enjudayu V, who was renowned as a master. From 1948 onwards, he played shamisen for the young head of the family who took on the name Kiyomoto Enjudayu VI, and served as a supervisor. In 1953, he changed his name to Kiyomoto Eijuro. In 1955, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). In addition to his representative works such as "The Thirteenth Night" (1952 Art Festival Award), "Toribeyama," "Harusame," "The Tale of Hikoichi," and "Maboroshi Oshichi," he also demonstrated his talent as a composer by releasing Yamatogaku pieces such as "Ayame," "Ejima Ikushima," "Oriki," "Takekurabe," "Danjūrō Musume," and "Yoru no Ume" under the name of Miyagawa Juro, thus laying the foundation for Yamatogaku, a new form of shamisen music advocated by Okura Kishichiro in the early Showa period.
