Confiscated land - Mokkanryo

Japanese:
Confiscated land - Mokkanryo
From the late Heian period onwards, land was confiscated by the government as an additional punishment from individuals who committed crimes against the state, such as rebellion or high treason. The Ritsuryo Code stipulated that the confiscation of fields, houses and assets was not limited to land (land), but from the late Heian period onwards land was the main target. An early example was the confiscation of land from Fujiwara no Yorinaga, who was considered the ringleader of the Hogen Rebellion in 1156. After confiscation, land was often given to individuals who had been instrumental in pursuing and killing rebels, or incorporated into various Imperial Court organizations. Yorinaga's confiscated land was incorporated into the Imperial Court's territory, and the Taira clan's confiscated land that was confiscated after the pursuit of the Taira clan in 1183 was given mainly to Minamoto no Yoritomo, forming the core of the Kanto Imperial Territory. The actual content of the confiscated lands varied from head family and lord positions to Geshi and Kumon positions.
