A nemerte of the Acanthodidae family (illustration). It is so named because the dorsal surface of its body is green. It is found from central Honshu southwards and lives in sand and mud in the intertidal zone. Large individuals can reach a body length of 80 cm and width of 1 cm. The dorsal surface is green with no markings and the ventral surface is pale in colour. The head is spatula-shaped and flattened, with a slight depression in the centre of the anterior edge. Many eye spots are scattered inside the transverse head groove and on the dorsal edge of the head end. On the ventral surface of the head end there is a proboscis meatus opening from which the snout protrudes outwards, and a large mouth opens behind it. The distinction between the head and neck is clear. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
