Toyoda Shiro

Film director. Born in Kyoto City. After graduating from Kyoto Prefectural First Middle School, he joined Shochiku's Kamata Studio in 1924 (Taisho 13). After transferring to Tokyo Seisho, his film "Young People" (1937), which depicts a tender relationship between a teacher and a female student, attracted fresh attention. He established his foothold in films such as "The Nightingale" (1938), which portrayed the realities of rural society at the time in a group of human figures, and "Spring on a Small Island" (1940), which was set in the Seto Inland Sea and dealt with leprosy patients, and after World War II he became known as a master of "literary films" with his film adaptations of famous literary works such as "The Wild Geese" (1953), "Married Couple Zenzai" (1955), "A Cat, Shozo and Two Women" (1956), "Snow Country" (1957), "A Dark Night's Journey" (1959), and "The Tale of the East of the Sea" (1960). His true talent is best displayed in "Married Couple Zenzai," which vividly depicts the joys and sorrows of a "squalid woman and a worthless man" in the lives of ordinary people through detailed environmental descriptions and in a humorous way. Other works include Sweet Sweat (1964) and Man in Ecstasy (1973).
