Snout butterfly - Tengucho (English spelling)

Snout butterfly - Tengucho (English spelling)

A butterfly of the family Nastiidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. In Japan, it is widely distributed from the southwestern part of Hokkaido to the Ryukyu Islands, but is not a common butterfly. However, in some places, it may appear in groups during the emergence season. Outside of Japan, it is distributed from the Korean Peninsula, China, and Taiwan to the Himalayas, southern Europe, and North Africa. Its wingspan is about 48 mm. The lower lip barbel, which is part of the mouthparts, extends forward a long way, and the name Nastiidae comes from this characteristic. This is the only species of Nastiidae found in Japan. In mainland Japan, it usually emerges once a year, emerging from late May or early June in warm areas (emergence is delayed in colder areas), and is multivoltine in the Amami Islands and Okinawa Island. In mainland Japan, the second generation may appear in July and August. The larvae feed on plants of the genus Celtis in the family Ulmaceae, such as Chinese hackberry, Ezo enoki, and mulberry haenoki. They overwinter as adults.
