A typical large-scale type of purse seine net. It is still widely used today. It is designed to catch schools of fish by catching them with the bottom of the net tightened like a purse bag. It was Sekizawa Akiyoshi who first introduced the drawstring net, which was developed in the United States, to Japan. He translated an outline of the net from an American fishery report and published it in the Chugai Suisan Zasshi in February 1881 (Meiji 14), as well as publishing introductory articles and giving lectures. At the time, there was a demand for highly efficient fishing nets that could be used offshore, and drawstring nets attracted attention as such a type of net.
