Telul el‐Thalathāt (English spelling)

Japanese: テル･サラサート（英語表記）Telul el‐Thalathāt

Located 51km west of Mosul in northern Iraq, this site dates back to the early period of pottery in Mesopotamia. It is a memorable site as it was the first Japanese excavation in West Asia by the Tokyo University Iraq-Iran Archaeological Research Team led by Egami Namio. Four excavations were carried out in 1956, 1957, 1964, and 1965, and a fifth excavation was carried out in 1976 by the Tokyo University Iran-Iraq Academic Research Team led by Fukai Shinji. It consists of three high tells and two low tells, with telul being the plural form of tell, and Telul el-Thalathāt meaning three hills.

イラク北部のモースルの西51kmにあって，メソポタミアにおける土器の初現期に始まる遺跡。江上波夫を団長とする東京大学イラク･イラン遺跡調査団が，日本人として西アジアで初めて発掘を行った記念すべき遺跡である。1956,57,64,65年の4次にわたって発掘を行い，さらに76年に東京大学イラン･イラク学術調査団が深井晋司団長のもとで第5次の発掘を行った。　高い三つと低い二つのテルからなり，telulはtelの複数形，Telul el‐Thalathātは三つの丘の意味。
