Roman Dmowski

Polish politician. Born into a family of craftsmen near Warsaw, he began his political career after graduating from Warsaw University. In 1897 he founded the National Democratic Party, and until the start of World War I he tried to achieve Polish unification and autonomy with Russian backing. He gained support mainly from the propertied classes, and developed a nationalistic movement with anti-socialist and anti-Semitic slogans. In 1904 he came to Japan, where he thwarted plans by J. Piłsudski and others for an independence uprising with Japanese military assistance. During World War I he led the Polish National Committee, and represented Poland at the peace conference in 1919. After independence he came into conflict with Piłsudski's political line, and after Piłsudski's coup d'état he formed the Greater Poland faction and opposed the Piłsudski regime.

ポーランドの政治家。ワルシャワ近郊の職人の家に生まれ、ワルシャワ大学卒業後、政治活動を始めた。1897年国民民主党を結成、第一次世界大戦初めまでは、ロシアの後援によってポーランドの統一と自治を実現しようとした。おもに有産階級の支持を集め、反社会主義、反ユダヤ主義をスローガンとして、民族主義的な運動を展開した。1904年には来日し、J・ピウスツキらの日本の軍事援助による独立蜂起(ほうき)計画を妨害した。第一次大戦中はポーランド国民委員会を指導し、19年の講和会議でポーランド代表を務めた。独立後は、ピウスツキの政治路線と対立し、ピウスツキのクーデター後は、大ポーランド派を結成し、ピウスツキ体制に反対した。
