A representative phosphate mineral. Its chemical composition is Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (F,Cl,OH). Some of the Ca may be replaced by Pb, and some of the P by Si and As. When F, Cl, and OH are the main components, they are called fluorapatite, chlorapatite, and hydroxyapatite, respectively, and when some of the PO 4 is replaced by CO 3 OH, they are called carbonate apatite. It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and shows hexagonal columnar and plate-like crystals, but often forms granular or clumpy aggregates. Specific gravity is 3.1-3.2, Mohs hardness is 5.
