Overwork is a state where fatigue accumulates as new fatigue accumulates before it has been fully recovered from. However, in reality, there are various degrees of fatigue, such as complete recovery with one night's sleep and recovery with rest on a day off. In any case, it is important to recover from fatigue when it comes to overwork. In today's busy world, even if it is impossible to recover from a day's fatigue in one night, it is advisable to use the wisdom of life to try to recover from a week's fatigue on a day off. In addition, fatigue (feeling of fatigue) is often recognized as a systemic symptom of various illnesses, so it is dangerous to simply self-diagnose fatigue as overwork when fatigue is difficult to recover from, and a doctor's examination is required.

過労とは、疲労が回復しないうちに、次の疲労が加わり、これが繰り返されて、疲労が蓄積した状態とされる。疲労は生体の防御反応の一つと考えられ、だるさ、食欲不振などを訴えるが、休養すれば回復するものである。しかし、実際には一晩の睡眠で完全に回復する場合もあれば、休日などの休養で回復する場合もあるというように、種々の程度がある。いずれにしても、過労に対しては、疲労を回復させることがだいじであり、多忙になりやすい現代では、1日の疲労を一晩で回復することは不可能でも、1週の疲労は休日で回復することに努めるなど、いわゆる生活の知恵が望まれる。また、疲れ（疲労感）は、種々の病気の全身症状としても自覚されることが多いため、回復しにくい疲労の場合、簡単に過労と自己診断することは危険で、医師の診察を必要とする。
