Conger eel - Conger eel (English spelling)
A general term for marine fish belonging to the family Congridae in the order Anguilliformes. Over a dozen species are known to inhabit the waters around Japan, from Hokkaido southward. Their body shape is eel-like. They lack pelvic fins, and their skin has no scales. Their eggs are large and planktonic, and their larvae are leptocephalous (leaf-shaped larvae) similar to those of eels. The Japanese conger eel, Conger myriaster (illustration), is the most important species of conger eel, and is found in abundance in the waters around Japan south of Uchiura Bay in Hokkaido, especially on the Pacific coast, and also along the coast of the Korean Peninsula and the East China Sea.
