Prince Tomohira

Japanese: 具平親王 - ともひらしんのう
Prince Tomohira
Year of death: 28 July 1009 (21 August 1009)
Year of birth: 19 June 1964 (30 July 964)
He was a member of the imperial family and a man of letters in the mid-Heian period. He was called Gochusho-o, Rokujo-no-miya, and Chikusa-dono. He was ranked second rank. He was the seventh son of Emperor Murakami, and his mother was Princess Shoshi (the daughter of Imperial Prince Daimei). He was the father of Fujiwara no Yorimichi's wife Takahime. He was proclaimed prince at the age of two. He was extremely intelligent at a young age, and studied Chinese poetry and prose under Yoshishige Yasutane and others, but he also excelled in waka poetry, was knowledgeable about yin and yang, and medicine, and was a skilled calligrapher. His personal collections of poems and tanka have not been handed down to the present day, but his works remain in Chinese poetry anthologies and imperial anthologies. He is the only prince who is considered a talented person during the reign of Emperor Ichijo (986-1011). He has many anecdotes, and one famous story is that when he argued with Fujiwara no Kinto about the superiority of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro and Ki no Tsurayuki, he claimed that Hitomaro was superior and won (Kojidan). In 987, he became the Minister of State for Central Affairs, and four years later, he wrote the Koketsu Gaidensho. He also had deep ties to Buddhism due to his connections with Minamoto no Shin and Yasutane. He lived in a luxurious mansion called Chikusadono in Rokujo, Sakyo. <References> Shosuke Ozone, "Thoughts on Prince Kohira" (National Language and Literature, December 1958 issue)
