[Born] Meiwa 1 (1764) [Died] March 22, 1824 (Bunsei 7). An ukiyo-e artist from the late Edo period. Commonly known as Sanjiro. He first studied under Kitao Shigemasa and took the name Kitao Masami. He made his name as an illustrator for yellow-covered books, became famous for his bird's-eye views of Edo, and produced many picture books. In 1794 (Kansei 6), he became the official painter for Lord Tsuyama, studied under Kano Korenobu, and took the names Kuwagata Keisai and also Shoshin. He stopped making prints and devoted himself to painting by hand. His main work is the "Emaki of Early Modern Craftsmen" (Tokyo National Museum).
