Kuwagata Keisai

Japanese: 鍬形蕙斎 - くわがたけいさい

[Died] March 22, 1824 (Bunsei 7).
An ukiyo-e artist from the late Edo period. Commonly known as Sanjiro. He first studied under Kitao Shigemasa and took the name Kitao Masami. He made his name as an illustrator for yellow-covered books, became famous for his bird's-eye views of Edo, and produced many picture books. In 1794 (Kansei 6), he became the official painter for Lord Tsuyama, studied under Kano Korenobu, and took the names Kuwagata Keisai and also Shoshin. He stopped making prints and devoted himself to painting by hand. His main work is the "Emaki of Early Modern Craftsmen" (Tokyo National Museum).

江戸時代後期の浮世絵師。通称は三二郎。初め北尾重政に学んで北尾政美と号した。黄表紙の挿絵画家として世に出，江戸の鳥瞰図を描いて有名になり，多くの絵本を制作。寛政6 (1794) 年津山侯の御用絵師となり，狩野惟信に学んで鍬形蕙斎，また紹真と名のり，版画制作をやめてもっぱら肉筆画を描く。主要作品『近世職人尽絵巻』 (東京国立博物館) 。
