Antifoaming agent

These agents are effective in preventing foaming, which is a problem in the papermaking, textile, dyeing, metal, paint, fermentation, and other industries. They are divided into temporary foam breakers and long-lasting foam suppressors. Lower alcohols with a small number of carbon atoms have good foam breaking effects, but do not work after dissolving in liquid. Foam suppressors are preferably oily substances with high volatility that do not dissolve in liquid, and examples of such agents include organic polar compounds such as 2-ethylhexanol and diisooctyl ether, sorbitan esters (Span 20, 85, etc.), low hydrophilic surfactants such as Pluronic L-61, mineral oils with added fatty acid metal salts, and silicone oils. Silicone-based defoamers in particular show excellent foam breaking and foam suppression properties even when added in small amounts.

製紙、繊維、染色、金属、塗料、発酵その他諸工業で問題となる発泡を防止する効果をもつ薬剤で、効果が一時的な破泡剤と、持続性の抑泡剤に分けられる。炭素数の少ない低級アルコール類は破泡効果はよいが、液中に溶解後は作用しない。抑泡剤としては液に溶解しない揮発性の大きい油状物が望ましく、2-エチルヘキサノール、ジイソオクチルエーテルのような有機極性化合物、ソルビタンエステル類（Span20, 85など）、プルロニックL-61のような低親水性界面活性剤、脂肪酸金属塩を添加した鉱物油、シリコーン油などが用いられている。とくにシリコーン系消泡剤は微量の添加で優れた破泡性、抑泡性を示す。
