A naturalized plant of the grass family native to Europe (illustration). It is a perennial herb that grows into a clump. It appears gray-green because of the white hairs all over, which is where its Japanese name comes from. The stem is 30-80cm tall, and the leaves are linear, 10-30cm long and 5-8mm wide, densely covered with velvety white hairs, and the leaf sheaths have white upturned hairs. From May to July, it produces oblong, somewhat dense panicles, each 8-15cm long. The spikelets grow densely on the branches of the inflorescence, are about 4mm long, white with a pale purple tinge, and covered with velvety hairs. There are two florets, the upper one with a short hook-shaped awn.
