A large wild boar (illustration) that lives in the forests and savannas of central Africa from Liberia to Ethiopia and Tanzania. It is a mammal of the Suidae family in the order Artiodactyla. Its body shape is similar to that of a wild boar, but its nose is large, reaching a diameter of 13 cm, and it has sparse, long, coarse black hair, allowing its dark brown skin to show through. It has a mane that grows from the forehead to the neck. It is 150-190 cm long, 76-110 cm high at the shoulder, and about 30 cm long at the tail, and weighs 160-275 kg. It usually lives in family groups consisting of 2-4 males and females and their offspring, but sometimes relatively large groups of up to 20 individuals can be seen. リベリアからエチオピア,タンザニアにかけてのアフリカ中央部の森林とサバンナにすむ大型のイノシシ(イラスト)。偶蹄目イノシシ科の哺乳類。体型はイノシシに似るが,鼻鏡が大きく直径13cmに達し,長く粗い黒色の体毛がまばらにはえるのみで,黒褐色の皮膚が透けてみえる。前頭部から首にかけてたてがみがはえる。体長150~190cm,肩高76~110cm,尾長30cm前後,体重160~275kg。ふつう雌雄とその子2~4頭からなる家族群で生活するが,ときに20頭くらいまでの比較的大きな群れもみられる。
