This is a representative Japanese frog belonging to the Ranidae family, and it is thought that the etymology of the word "frog" comes from the cry of this species (illustration). It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, the Osumi Islands, the Korean Peninsula, and northern China, and the body length is 6.5 to 7.5 cm for males and 7 to 8.5 cm for females. It is exceptional among Japanese frogs in that the body color of the males is yellow-green and the base color of the females is grayish-white with irregular black spots. It lives around rice paddies, streams, and ponds on flat land, and is often found in grassy areas where it can escape into the water with a single leap.

アカガエル科に含まれる日本の代表的なカエルで，カエルという語源も本種の鳴き声に由来すると考えられている（イラスト）。本州，四国，九州，大隅諸島，朝鮮半島，中国北部に分布し，体長は雄6.5～7.5cm，雌7～8.5cm。日本産カエルとしては例外的に雌雄で体色が異なり，雄の基色は黄緑色，雌は灰白色でそれぞれ不規則な黒い斑紋がある。平地の水田，小川，池沼の周辺にすみ，一跳びで水中に逃げこめる草むらにいることが多い。
