Cotton moth (Notarcha derogata)
An insect of the family Pyralidae in the order Lepidoptera. Wingspan is 2.5-3cm. Both body and wings are pale yellow. There are 3-4 gray-brown transverse lines on the wings, and ring patterns on the transverse veins and within the middle chamber of the forewing. The outer edge is bordered with black-brown lines. It is widely distributed from almost all of Japan to neighboring continents, from the tropics and subtropics of Asia to Australia. It occurs 2-3 times a year, and adults often fly to lights. The larvae are considered pests that feed on the leaves of cotton, hibiscus, and rose of Sharon of the Malvaceae family, and paulownia of the Sterculiaceae and Scrophulariaceae families.

鱗翅目メイガ科の昆虫。翅の開張2.5~3cm。体・翅とも淡黄色。翅には灰褐色の横線が3~4本あり,横脈上と前翅中室内に環状の紋がある。外縁は黒褐色線で縁取られている。ほとんど日本の全域から隣接大陸,アジアの熱帯,亜熱帯からオーストラリアに広く分布している。年2~3回の発生で,成虫はよく灯火に飛来する。幼虫はアオイ科のワタ,フヨウ,ムクゲ,アオギリ科やゴマノハグサ科のキリなどの葉を食べる害虫とされている。
