An insect of the Curculionidae family (illustration) in the order Coleoptera. Native to North America, it was first discovered in Japan in 1976 in a rice paddy in Aichi Prefecture. This genus is distributed throughout North and South America, and about five species, including one that has invaded Japan, damage rice. The rice water weevil is called the rice water weevil in America, and is feared as a rice pest. The larvae damage the roots and are called root maggots. It is thought to have been brought to Japan on hay. The back of the adult is covered with fine gray-brown scales, with the center darker in color.
